Description
This type of choke is known as the W2DU, or “Maxwell” choke. It is sometimes called a W2DU balun. It is essentially a common mode rejection choke, made by stringing a number of ferrite beads over the coax. The advantage is that this is a very simple choke to build and it is very tidy in the shack. Depending on the type of material and number of tubes it can be quite effective. For lower frequencies you can connect two in series. These simple chokes usually solve most “soft” RF problems caused by common mode current, and usually, most of us only have “soft” problems. In cases where the CMC problem is worse, it is better to use another type of choke, such as the Guanella, or the other Cost Effective Chokes on other pages. (Price per each, the picture shows the regular version plus an example of one where a nylon sock is used to hold the beads together)
